TK's Jungle in Cary

December 16th, 2007

Sunday, Avery was invited to the birthday party of a friend who’s son shares his December 15th birthday and was turning 3. It was at TK’s jungle in Durham, which is a place with a bunch of bounce houses and air filled play structures. Note to self: good place for burning off toddler energy. I crawled around with him a little bit, protecting him from hyperactive 3-year old bouncers as he marveled at how interesting the big kids were. We’ll definitely have to bring him to a place like this when he’s a little older.

Here he is crawling around inside.

First Birthday

December 15th, 2007

Avery is now a year old! Hello, toddler. Its amazing to think how much he has changed from the little 3lb guy NICU baby to a nonstop, giggly, demanding toddler.

For his birthday, we didn’t do too much. I toyed around with the idea of having a big party, but I just didn’t have the time, money, or energy for that. I wanted to do something along the lines of picnic/park, but since it was 40 degrees and raining that wasn’t going to fly. He had fun playing inside with all his new toys. I made him a cake, Aunt Lisa came over, and we went to Elmos for a quick dinner.

Birthday cake, yum yum yum.

Birthday cake is good for mashing. mash mash mash. Uh oh!

A few videos of the occasion.

One year old? When did that happen?

Avery’s is going to be one year old in less than 2 weeks!! Can you believe it? Here are some links to wishlists and registries for stuff for Avery, both needs and wants. I’m putting things we re going to buy for him on there too, like a new carseat and some baby-proofing stuff, so just look at the fun stuff. I’ll make a sidebar soon, so it doesn’t go away as we make more posts.

As a general rule, we prefer quality over quantity, especially given all the recent lead paint and GHB toys fiascos. We are also trying to avoid (for as long as possible) branded characters (think elmo, dora, spongebob) for as long as possible. Since we don’t have a TV this is easy now, but looking at the one year old clothes its like we crossed some invisible line where “baby soft, cute, ” and “brandable, hello disney characters” are divided. I think the best toys are those that rely on imagination and creativity and have endless possibilities. PVC-free. That said, kids are expensive!

Ave is a size 12-18 months (he’s long). Err on the side of bigger, he’ll always grow in.

Here are some places we have registries/wishlists at so far (I’ll update as I have time):
